Halloween Costumes!

My friends and I have developed a tradition the last few years.  We decided 3 years ago that we would make our own costumes since all the costumes made for adult girls are slinky and expensive and we could make one for the same price and it be way more awesome.  The first year we went with a Victorian theme.  These were hand sewn without a sewing machine (that came next Christmas).  Unfortunately the pics were saved on my last phone and I have yet to find the memory card.  Last year we went with a Scottish theme.  We even had the hats. :)  The pictures for this were also on my phone.

This year is our last year so we decided that we would go with a really fun theme.  We are going as Disney princess'.  My husband and I will be belle and the beast.  We also have Ariel, Jasmine, and Meg off Hercules.  We are going to the cheesecake factory, because that was where we went the first year.

I started first on my husbands.    He is the beast and his costume will be a white shirt, gold vest to match my dress, black pants, and blue jacket.

He decided that he didn't want the cravat, which is the lace collar sticking out of his shirt.  So we choose between two patterns.  There was a sale at our locale Hancock's with simplicity pattens 5 for $5. The two pattens we choose were 2333 and 4923.

Not the best pics I know.  Anyway we ended up choosing 4923, the bottom pic.  We chose 4923 because it would be easier to adapt the jacket into the Beast's jacket.  The Beast's jacket actually has 2 tails in the back, and the other things we needed to make were all in this pattern as well.

I started with the pants.  I made them in a black knit material.  The only thing left to do to them is put the buttons on them.  I don't have pictures of these yet.

I next started on the jacket since it would be the most labor intensive part of the costume.  The material is a royal blue heavy weight, knit.  Probably a cotton polyester blend.  The pic below is some of the pattern pieces cut out.

I first put together the body of the jacket.  I then sewed on the sleeves.

This picture shows the jacket without the cuffs yet.  When I sewed on the first sleeve I had no trouble at all even with the 2 small gathers at the top.  When I put on the second sleeve I actually had so many problems I sewed it on 3 times before I moved on to the cuffs.  The funny of this is that even though I detached and reattached the sleeve so many times I still did not realise the problem until I put on the cuffs.  The first cuff went on fine just like the first sleeve.  The second cuff was to small and was requiring gathering that I couldn't figure out.  It was then that I realized that I had attached the wrong end of the sleeve to the shoulder of the jacket.  I have no idea how that happened, but happily reattached the sleeve, which fit perfectly, when put on the right way.  :)  The next picture is one of the finished cuff.

I have now just added the gold ribbon to the cuffs.  Next I will make the vest then I will go back and shorten the front of the jacket, it is then that I can add the gold collar, and the ribbon around the hem of the jacket.
